Fees & Policies

Our teachers are degreed professionals who earn all or part of their living by teaching music. In order for our school to run smoothly and attract the best possible teachers, there are studio policies in place to respect their time, as well as your own.

These policies are widely used at music studios around the country because they are fair and reasonable. To avoid future misunderstandings and conflicts, take a moment to read the following. Let us know if you have any questions.

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons are $120 per month for one-on-one private lessons once a week.

If your first lesson falls in the middle of the month, we prorate your tuition for the 1st month to reflect only the lessons you actually receive. After that, we charge a flat monthly rate and tuition that remains the same each month.

Occasionally, a student will receive only 3 lessons in a month due to the occurrence of a major holiday. However, all students receive extra lessons throughout the year because some months have more than 4 weeks. Months with 5 lessons balance out the occasional months where a holiday causes a student to receive 3 lessons.

When comparing tuition between schools, remember that some schools increase tuition or skip lessons for months that have an extra (5th) lesson. At Katy Music Studio, the 5th lesson is always included at no extra charge.

Late Arrival

Students arriving late will not have their lesson time extended. Our teachers typically have students scheduled consecutively throughout the day and are not allowed to impose on another student’s lesson time.

Cancellation Policy

Your lesson time is reserved specifically for you and is unavailable to other students. Your teacher has made a commitment to instruct you at that time. Make every effort to come to your lesson and avoid scheduling other activities during your lesson time. Consistent attendance helps ensure your best progress.

Any lesson cancelled by your instructor will be rescheduled by the instructor.

Lessons cancelled by the student will be rescheduled if and when possible; subject to the instructor’s availability. Note that your instructor will likely be staying extra time to do your makeup which, in effect, is two lesson times for them.

Never cancel a lesson because you have not had time to practice. Attend your lesson and review the material so progress can be maintained.


Recitals are held in the spring and the fall. Participation is optional. We charge a $20 recital fee to cover participation trophies and facility rental.

Family, friends, and students not performing at a recital are welcome to attend.

Books and Materials

The teacher selects the books for each student on a student‑by‑student basis. All books and materials/equipment are to be paid for by the student.

Summer Lessons

In order to maintain students musical progress, Katy Music Studio continues lessons in June, July and August with our regular teaching schedule.


Good practice habits need to be developed from the onset and maintained during music study. Teachers will provide assistance in developing a practice plan if needed.

Substitute Teachers

A teacher may occasionally miss a lesson due to illness or family emergency. When this happens, the school will arrange for a substitute teacher or attempt to reschedule your lesson. Many students enjoy an occasional lesson with another teacher


Our school is closed on most major holidays. These include New Year’s Day, the week of Spring Break, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas and New Years (approximately 10 days depending).

Occasionally, your lesson will fall on a holiday and you will not have a lesson. There are no tuition adjustments or make-up lessons given for lessons that fall on the above major holidays because all students receive additional lessons at no additional cost on months where an extra (5th) week occurs. 

Please note: We do not follow the public school system schedules for staff preparation/student holidays. If the public school system has, for example, a teacher “in-service” day. When in doubt, call your instructor so you do not forfeit your lesson.

Student Leave of Absence

There are times, most notably in the summer, when a student leaves town or must suspend their lessons temporarily. As a courtesy to the instructor please let them know two weeks in advance.

If the student wishes to guarantee their day/time/teacher, and tuition upon resuming their lessons, the student must pay in advance for the returning month.

Care of Young Children

The school is not responsible for providing student supervision before or after class. Your child’s safety is important to us. Parents with very young students or siblings are asked to remain in the school during lessons. Students are not to be left at the music school for an extended length of time before or after class. Please make arrangements to pick up your child as soon as their lesson is over.

Children puzzles and games are available in the waiting area.
